PvP Build Guide: Combat Basics
Core PvP combat basics and survival rules.
Guide Sections
Important: PvP Is Not PvE Combat
Light Attack Weaving
High DPS in PvE. Not required in PvP.
What matters in PvP
Block attack weaving. Quick blocking at the right moments is what saves your life.
Blocking 101 (This Is Huge)
Blocking is the biggest mitigation tool in the game: it reduces incoming damage by ~50% before resistances apply.
A quick block + release can be the difference between surviving and escaping or dying instantly.
Do not hold block forever
- Drains stamina
- Slows you down
- Gets you killed anyway
When to hold block
Bar swap muscle memory: Hold Block -> Bar Swap -> Release Block.
Line of Sight (LoS) = Survival
If they cannot see you, they cannot hit you. LoS wins fights more than gear does.
Use corners, rocks, doors, walls, and terrain. Roll dodge, sprint, break LoS, reset.
Recovery Myth (Hot Take But PvP-True)
Your resources do recover in combat, but sustained PvP pressure constantly suppresses their impact. In real fights, you will almost always spend more than passive recovery can return.
Stacking recovery in PvP is like running a marathon in a hot desert while your only source of water is another runner feeding it to you with a teaspoon — it looks helpful, but it won’t save you when the pace increases.
Effective sustain comes from control, not stacking: build around potions, burst sustain tools, skills that trade one resource for another, and short Line-of-Sight resets that allow recovery to tick uninterrupted. As the meta shifts, so does when and how recovery is allowed to function.
Stats: Magicka / Stamina / Health (Simple Truth)
Magicka
- Stronger heals (for mag builds)
- More casts
- Better sustain for mag skills
Stamina
- More blocks
- More roll dodges
- Better sprinting/escaping
- Stamina damage scaling (for stam builds)
Health
- Bigger HP pool = more time to react
- Increases how much healing you can receive
Starting Attribute Split
A good "new PvPer" starting point: 30 Health / 20 Main Stat / 4 Low Stat. Then test and adjust based on feel.
Final Rule: Your Build Must Be Fun
The joy is moments like diving into chaos and surviving, pulling off a sneaky rez, baiting a whole group into overcommitting, and riding into a keep while the enemy swarms onto you.
That is PvP. That is the magic.
Speaking Magic
Your stat sheet is magic in that if you are looking close enough you will miss the slight of hand... nerdy maths bit.
